The Five C’s of Diamonds: Carat-Weight, Clarity, Color, Cut and Confidence:
The first important factor when selecting and buying a diamond is Cut.
Many women are already familiar with the various popular cuts of diamonds—Princess, Pear, Marquise and Round Brilliant. Shape or “cut” is achieved by cutting and polishing the diamond’s facets to allow the maximum amount of light to pass through. Again, the experts at Your Diamond Source can help educate you about your options and the fine points of buying a brilliant diamond, but without paying the outrageous prices many retailers pass along to their St Louis diamond customers.
A second important factor in selecting the perfect diamond is clarity.
Before we discuss clarity, it’s important to note that all diamonds have what are referred to as inclusions. Inclusions are “birth marks” or imperfections that prevent light from fully passing through a diamond. Less inclusions equal greater clarity; more inclusions diminish the ability of light to pass through a diamond, thus diminishing a diamond’s overall value.
The third factor in determining a diamond’s value and quality is color.
Diamonds are found in a multitude of colors—black, pink, brown, yellow and more. Most consumers want diamonds that fall in the white range of colors. The most sought after color is considered no color at all. White diamonds allow all light to pass through easily and display all the colors of a rainbow. GIA’s scales rate diamonds from D (colorless) to Z which represents light yellow. The scales go from the highest level of colorless, near colorless, faint yellow, very light yellow to light yellow, the lowest level on the scale. To accurately rate colors on this scale, requires a trained and discerning eye. Mike Sabo’s years of experience in the diamond industry allows him to show you the differences and find the best quality possible.
The fourth and final criteria for determining a diamond’s value is Carat-Weight.
Carat-weight is the standard used to measure the weight of diamonds. As the carats increase, so does the value of the diamond. While carat weight is only one of four factors, the other three being color, cut and clarity, it carries the most weight in determining a diamond’s rarity, and thus, its value.
